Reprints

I've really been remiss in posting news about my reprints. Well, up until today, I really only had news about one reprint. I'll talk about that first, then give my new news. My story "Salt of Judas," which originally appeared in Intergalactic Medicine Show, has been reprinted in the Prime Codex anthology from Paper Golem books, which came out about... read more »

Go to Boot Camp

Friday, June 8, is the deadline to apply for Orson Scott Card's Literary Boot Camp. Boot Camp is a weeklong writers' workshop that is worth every dollar of the $725 tuition. I attended Boot Camp in 2003 and I owe a great deal of my success as a writer to that experience. If you're serious about writing fiction, and have... read more »

Where have I been?

As Inigo Montoya said, "Let me explain... No, there is too much. Let me sum up." After my last post, I drove to Los Angeles, stopping in Cedar City overnight. In L.A., I went to a round table of people working in Hollywood, run by Marc Zicree (whom I met at the Nebulas a week earlier). I got some good... read more »

Deadlines

Last night, I mentioned to my writers' group that I've been having difficulty writing without a hard deadline. I've been taking an online TV writing class, and I have to produce about 10 new pages every week by 8:00pm on Wednesday, and I generally end up writing most of those 10 pages on Wednesday, rather than doing them earlier. But... read more »

Sherlock Holmes and the Captured Agent

In 1920, Inspector Smythe from Scotland Yard visited the retired Sherlock Holmes at his home in Sussex Downs. "Mr. Holmes," said Smythe, "your assistance is required in resolving a threat to his majesty, King George." Holmes nodded. "Tell me of this threat." "We received word from an informant, telling us that an assassin had been hired by a foreign power,... read more »

So that’s a crime now?

From Yahoo news: Ty Pennington, host of ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," apologized to his fans and co-workers Monday after he was arrested for investigation of drunken driving. "I made an error in judgment," Pennington said in a statement released through his publicist, Stan Rosenfield. I remember when drunken driving was a crime. Now you can get arrested for investigating... read more »

Windfall

On Saturday, I got an unexpected check from my previous employer. I thought they had paid me everything they were going to pay me, but I was wrong. So now I have to decide what to do with the extra money. I know the usual advice when you get some unexpected money is "don't spend it all in one place."... read more »

Can he swing from a thread?

I just got back from a midnight showing of Spider-Man 3. It's very good and a lot of fun to watch. I recommend it. But... (You sensed there was a "but" coming, didn't you?) ***Minor spoiler for people who haven't seen the ads or the first two movies *** (more…)

Writing update

The other day I said I was still undecided if the drastically shorter prologue was better. That evening, I had an idea, and over the past couple of days I added a new scene of about 400 words. I now am sure it's better. Today I wrote ten pages of a Battlestar Galactica TV script for my TV-writing class. Tomorrow... read more »

I’m a Pixel-Stained Technopeasant

For an explanation of what that means, see http://papersky.livejournal.com/318273.html. The following story of mine first appeared in the Probability Zero feature of the December 2006 issue of Analog Science Fiction and Fact. Upgrade by Eric James Stone Through the camera in the waiting room, Harry watched the customer. "Mr. Smith" was standing stiffly, ignoring the chairs and the table full... read more »
