InterGalactic Medicine Show issue 10 is online, with my story "The Robot Sorcerer." I think this is my favorite of my published stories. I wrote the story at the Odyssey workshop last year (more details about the writing will be posted soon at the IGMS editor's blog), and it contains an Odyssey 2007 class in-joke--a reference to a movie in... read more »
I went and voted for Sarah Palin for Vice President, and had to vote for her running mate, too. So, if McCain wins Utah by only one vote and wins in the Electoral College because he won Utah, then my vote made the difference. Of course, the likeliest scenario is that, just as the polls say, Obama will win the... read more »
Mary Robinette Kowal brought my attention to a blog post by author Scott Westerfeld called "Do the Math," in which he claims: Since World War II the Democrats have been overwhelmingly better at running the economy. He runs some numbers on economic growth under Democratic presidencies vs. Republican presidencies, and comes up with the following numbers for percentage rate of... read more »
My friend Spencer Ellsworth thinks conservatives should vote for Obama because he will focus on hunting Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan and Pakistan, without the distraction of the Iraq war. Spencer's right when he says that Al-Qaeda is the biggest terrorist threat to our country. But I think he's wrong about the effect of electing Obama. Ever since we abandoned Vietnam, our... read more »

InterGalactic Medicine Show editor Edmund Schubert reveals one of the reasons why he's bought so many stories from me in this interview with Alethea Kontis. Go read it if you haven't already -- I think you'll find it interesting. (The interview was actually published a couple of months ago, but I forgot to link to it at the time.)
After Palin's somewhat shaky performances in recent TV interviews, I was worried that she might perform poorly in tonight's debate. My worry was needless. She did very well. In fact, I think she did more than hold her own with Biden--I think she won the debate because I think what she said and the way she said it will connect... read more »
One of my oldest writing friends (in terms of length of time I've know her, not age) is Becca Fitzpatrick. We met in an online writing class in early 2003, and then we were both in the same in-person writing group for a while until she and her husband moved out of state. In that online writing class, I was... read more »
This was certainly the most debate-like Presidential debate I can recall. Overall, though I agree with McCain more than I agree with Obama, I think Obama won the debate because he did what he had to do: present himself as serious and knowledgeable about foreign policy, so people worried about his inexperience would feel more comfortable voting for him. I'm... read more »
