A couple of items of good news: For the first time, one of my stories has placed in the Analog readers' poll: "Rejiggering the Thingamajig" tied for third place in the short story category with "Shame" by Mike Reznick and Lezli Robyn, behind "Red Letter Day" by Kristine Katherine Rusch and "Happy Are the Bunyips" by Carl Frederick. My fellow... read more »
Actually, the cover is for everyone everywhere, not just Houston. Here's the cover for my collection Rejiggering the Thingamajig and Other Stories, coming this month from Paper Golem Press: Special thanks to Mary Robinette Kowal for her outstanding work in designing the cover.
This morning, for the first time since probably 2006, I weighed less than 180 pounds: 179.8. Back in December of 2005, I had gotten up to 233 pounds, and in 2006 I got down to under 180, but over the next few years my weight was generally in the 180s, then the 190s. Last year I got up to 205.8... read more »
One of the reasons for the poll about ebook readers I did a couple of days ago was I wanted to see whether Kindle readers outnumbered other readers in approximate proportion to my ebook sales numbers. For the three titles I had available for both Kindle and Nook, the Kindle version was outselling the Nook version by about 7 to... read more »

He was personally responsible for my meeting Harlan Ellison and the ensuing "Harlan story." Rick shares my love of puns, and like me, he's been published in InterGalactic Medicine Show. Rick edited the recent anthology 2020 Visions.... read more »

That's right: I'm thrilled to announce that my story "That Leviathan, Whom Thou Hast Made" has been nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Novelette. I continue to be amazed at my good fortune. In celebration... read more »
Just realized I forgot to mention a sale: my short story “Into the West” will be appearing in InterGalactic Medicine Show later this year. It will be my eighth appearance in IGMS. I originally wrote the story for the 2008 Codexian Idol Contest (a motivational contest run by CodexWriters.com.) It took second place behind a marvelous story by my friend... read more »
We often hear liberals say that the rich aren't paying their fair share of taxes. As I pointed out in my post on Friday, the top 5% of taxpayers pay 59% of federal income taxes. That's apparently not good enough for liberals. So I'd like to find out what the limit is. Considering that the top 5% earn 35% of... read more »
One day in the not too distant future, a computerized car rolled off the robotic assembly line. A person bought the car because of the huge advantage that came from its smart parts: the human could sit back and leave the driving to the car. The car had lots of smart sensors that could detect road hazards and traffic signs.... read more »
